Audio Only Project Practice: Creaking Door With A Reverb Effect

The brief for our 'Audio Only Project' is to create... A 3-minute, audio only soundscape on the theme - 'sense of place'. We will do this in pairs which will go towards are final project for the first semester.

My group will record sound using a Zoom Sound Recorder and edit the sound using Pro Tools Software.

To practice my skills recording with the Zoom I captured some Mono sounds and a Stereo atmosphere sound. The best Mono sounds I captured was a creaking door sound and a toilet flush sound.

After I captured these sounds I imported them in to the Pro Tools Software and began editing
them.

As a practice task, I recorded the sound of a creaking door with a Zoom sound recorder and a basic mono plug-in mic. The aim for this practice was to expand my skills recording and editing sound. I exploited the already mysterious and haunting nature of a creaking door and it's links with the horror genre and made it even more strange. I added a reverb effect to create a completely different sound. The sound effect would be useful for a horror/thriller film because of the sounds haunting ambiance.

This is a screen grab of the tracks I recorded uploaded on to the Pro Tools Software.

I added different effects to the Mono creaking door sound and found out that I could completely change how the track sounds. I added a reverb effect and made the track sound like a haunting and sinister violin sound; a noise you would expect to hear in a horror or thriller film.

The following images are screen grabs of me editing the creaking door track with the reverb effect...

This image shows me editing the creaking door track with the reverb effect control board.

This image is a closer screen grab of the reverb effects board. You can see that there are many controls to change the sound of the track. I challenged myself to create a scary horror sound out of the creaking door. So in my case, I increased the reverb time, the room size and the mix to levels which made the track sound surreal yet not over the top edited.

This following clip is the creaking door sound I recorded, with the added reverb effect which I exported from Pro Tools and uploaded on to YouTube.

x3, 15 Second Film Clips: Filming and Editing Exercise

For the visual exercise for my experimental film and to develop my filming skills and practice using the XF100 Digital Camera. I shot 3, 15 second shots of destinations around Sheffield. The first is a busy tram stop in Sheffield's City Centre. The Second is a water feature in Sheffield's Peace Garden; which I added a time lapse effect to the shot. I did this by changing the speed, increasing the speed by 400%. The third shot is a high angle shot displaying a the final red and black ball potted in a game of pool on a pool table in Sheffield Hallam's Student Union bar.

I edited the footage using Final Cut Pro Software which I will be using for more film editing tasks throughout my course. I am still developing my skills using the software; this task helped me to develop my existing knowledge using Final Cut Pro to edit footage.

Below is the 3, 15 second film clips which I recorded on the XF100 Digital Camera, edited on Final Cut Pro and uploaded through YouTube.

Richard Long: Inspiring Artist

For my first blog, I was instructed to post a URL of a site that inspires me. I have researched a man called Richard Long. As well as being an English sculpture, photographer and painter, he is more widely known for land art.

Long's creative and individual work is inspiring for an artist of any field, including film makers.

For Richard Long's official web site...  Click here

The following video clip is a short documentation which shows one of the many creative art projects by Richard Long.
