The first time I watched this film was a Project lesson, when we were first brief on the experimental film.
Steel Homes is a short documentary which includes creative film techniques which were useful whilst creating my experimental film.
Throughout Steel Homes, the owners of the storage lockers tell their own story of why they use the storage lockers and other entertaining information which controls the pace of the film. One of the films successes is the sound design. The sounds have been recorded and designed well and overlapped to create a fluent sense of place.
One issue I found when editing the sound for our audio only track, was that there were sudden jumps from one recorded sound to the other. After research I found out that an Atmosphere stereo sound had to be layered underneath the mono sounds to create a constant overall mood. Steel Homes does this extremely well.
In my project in terms of editing, I primarily focused on the audio only soundtrack. My intention was to overlap different sounds to create the same effect of the different layers of sound in Steel Homes. I overlapped guitar distortions, string screeches, blow pipes, reversed songs, drones and an overall stereo atmosphere sound.
Creating a sense of place through visual images is something we wanted to express. However, we didn't want to include images within a music studio too literal. Steel Homes uses close-up shots of objects which are contained inside a storage locker. They shots are left on screen for a few seconds allowing the audience to depict the story they tell.
The following three images are shots which are used in Steel Homes, to express meaning. These items are the only items displayed in clear view of what is located in the storage lockers. The images create meaning and depth, making the audience interpret which story they tell.
In our experimental film, we have tried to create a dark mood, showing close-up shots of an ash tray filled with used cigarette filters. We also included cans of alcohol. These symbols were intended to show the character's depression and sadness, resorting to alcohol to suppress his feelings.
